Learn About | Persian Rug Designs

Persian Tabriz Gonbad Rugs
There's nothing more romantic than imported furniture.  An antique end table can tell the story of a bachelor who finds love in France, as a silk tapestry could evoke images of Chinese royalty dining in an extravagant banquet hall.  For some reason the exotic nature of foreign objects can grip us with wonder.  The same holds true for Persian rugs, and Persian Gonbad rugs, in particular.

Gonbads, also known as Gombads, are categorized as such because of their amazing design.  Like other Persian designs, Gombads are very colorful and intricate.  There is no denying the hard work that goes into making these fine rugs.  Just one look at the detail involved in the designs will tell you why they are so highly coveted.  From their design to their construction Gombad Carpets are made with care.    Click here to read the entire article on Persian Gonbad Rugs

Persian Isfahan Seirafian Rugs
The Seirafian Isfahan moniker is synonymous with luxury, exclusivity and quality. Among the great city carpets produced in Iran are a sub-group of rugs recognized for their outstanding construction, quality and design. These are the carpets produced by master weavers who are capable of taking the beauty and construction of carpets to new heights. For three generations and nearly one hundred years, master weavers in the Seirafian family have produced Seirafian Isfahan rugs that exceed the quality and standards of the rest of Isfahan and other carpet-producing cities.

Persian Tabriz Mahi Rugs
The Persian Mahi rug is one of the classic patterns produced by the masterful carpet weavers in Tabriz. Said to originate in the Herat district of Afghanistan, the so-called Herati or Mahi pattern has been attributed to Farahan and other regions too. Regardless of the attribution, few weavers use the Mahi design as skillfully as those in Tabriz.

"Mahi" or "Mahi to Hos" is a Farsi nickname for an elegant motif known as fish in the pond. The Mahi design is made up of rosettes framed by a vine scroll rhombus and arching saz leaves that often resemble jumping fish with polychromatic stripes, eyes and life-like features. The four-way symmetry of the Mahi motif allows it to be combine seamless in a kaleidoscopic allover pattern or isolated and used on its own.

Persian Hunting Design Rugs
The Persian hunting design is one of the oldest and most elusive carpet styles. Originally created for Shahs and imperial leaders, the Persian hunting rug embodies a regal handsomeness and masculinity that is seldom seen in Persian city carpets. Rugs bearing the classic Persian hunting design include the oldest existent pile carpet as well as the most valuable silk carpets known today.

The Persian pictorial rug dates back 2,500 years to the beginning of the international carpet trade. The Pazyryk carpet, which is the oldest known pile carpet and the first hunting rug, was found in an ancient burial tomb from the year 500 B.C. This outstanding Persian hunting rug was preserved in the snow-covered Altai Mountains between Russia, Mongolia and Kazakhstan. The rug features motifs from the collapsed Assyrian Empire that controlled Mesopotamia, the ruling Persian Achaemenid Empire and the ancient Iranian Scythians who inhabited the Altai region and the Asian Steppes.   Click here to read the entire article on Persian Hunting Rugs.
